(i find this diagram kind of funny, because it implies a certain kind of linearity or forward progress, when in fact things like fashion in particular have a certain cycical, referential quality to them. i also wonder how a Postman-esque argument around technology would map to this model. here, there is a certain sense of certitude in the hierarchy of layering—but perhaps there is the case where a higher layer subverts its role within the hierarchy, moving beneath the structures designed to control and moderate it.)
